Bangladesh is planning to import potatoes and onions from alternative countries, excluding India. Discussions are underway on the possibility of importing these two products from other countries, including Pakistan. This decision has become a cause of concern for New Delhi.
Bangladesh recently imported 25,000 tons of sugar from Pakistan. In continuation of this, the country is looking for new suppliers for importing potatoes and onions, leaving India. The Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission (BTTC) has already identified China, Turkey, Germany, Egypt and Spain as possible alternative sources.
Commerce Ministry Secretary Salim Uddin said, “BTTC has identified alternative sources. We have urged importers to consider these options.
The increase in prices of potatoes and onions in the Indian market and the steps taken by the Indian government to discourage exports have forced Bangladesh to turn to alternative sources.
In the 2023-24 fiscal year, about 7.24 lakh tons of onions were exported to Bangladesh from India, worth 145 million US dollars. However, due to recent political changes and deterioration in trade relations, imports from India are declining.
Bangladesh’s move could have a long-term impact on the Indian market. In particular, Bangladesh’s trade partnership is important for India’s agricultural products.
Bangladesh is seriously considering importing onions from Pakistan, China and Turkey in addition to India. The Bangladesh government hopes that this decision will help stabilize the country’s market.
Bangladesh has traditionally been dependent on India for potatoes and onions. However, due to market conditions, political tensions and changes in India’s export policy, Bangladesh has adopted this new strategy.
